Summary Evening primose oil (EPO) and borage oil (BO), which contain high amounts of gamma linolenic acid (10% or 20%) and are described to stimulate prostaglandin E biosynthesis, were investigated in guinea pigs for their ability to stimulate an important active self protecting mechanism against allergens (“allergen tachyphylaxis”). The fatty acid composition of the seed oils of six pomegranate (Punica granatum L) cultivars was qualitatively and quantitatively determined by gas chromatography. The seeds contained oil in the range 51-152 mg kg -1 dry matter. Intervarietal differences in fatty acid composition were demonstrated (fatty acid esters as % (w/w) total fatty acid esters. Sour varieties had the highest while sour-sweet varieties had the lowest oil content. Eleven fatty acids were identified. Pinolenic acid (PLA), a natural compound isolated from pine nut oil, has been reported to exert bioactivity against lipid anabolism. Nonetheless, the underlying mechanisms still poorly elucidated. The aim of this study is to comprehensively demonstrate the effects of PLA on oleic acid (OA)-induced non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and their relationship with the lipid metabolic regulation. The aim of this work was to compare the efficiency of different extracts of hydroperoxide lyase from green bell peppers in producing aldehydes: a crude extract, a chloroplastic fraction, and a purified enzyme were investigated. From a crude extract, the HPO lyase was purified by ion-exchange chromatography with a 22.3-fold increase in purification factor. Analysis by SDS-PAGE electrophoresis under denaturating conditions showed only one protein with a molecular weight of 55 kDa, whereas size-exclusion chromatography indicated a molecular weight of 170 kDa. Duodenal samples from a previous experiment (Akraim et al., 2006) were reanalysed for determination of cis-15 intermediates of ruminal biohydrogenation (BH). Three dry Holstein cows fitted with a duodenal cannula received a diet with 14% (dry matter basis) raw linseed. C18 fatty acids (C18FA) represented 6.3% of dietary dry matter, and contained 57.8% of C18:3. After 18 days adaptation, on each cow, twelve samples of duodenal flow were taken over 3 days, composited, and analysed for FA composition.
